Valve Adjustment in Monrovia, CA
Modern vehicle engines run and adjust automatically with the use of advanced computers there are very few areas that need “Tune ups”. In the past there were areas that needed to be adjusted (Tuned Up) such as ignition timing, fuel mixture, idle speed and other areas that change over time due to normal wear and tear. The engine ECU now automatically makes those adjustments according to normal wear and tear and driving conditions.
However, there are still a few areas that need routine adjustments such as performing valve lash adjustments. This area needs adjustments based on the vehicle model and year. Many vehicles do have automatic adjustments. For most people having the valves adjusted regularly is not something that they think about.
The valve lash is the space between the valve that opens and closes to allow air and fuel into the engine and the rocker arm or cam lobe. The way the adjustment is performed varies from vehicle to vehicle. Some Subaru vehicles have adjustable rocker arms with a tip that can change the clearance between the valve tip and the rocker arms. Some of the Subaru turbo models have a bucket the sits on top of the valve and the adjustment requires the complete bucket or shim to be removed to get the proper clearance. A lot of Honda and Acura vehicles still have adjustable rocker arms, and it is recommended to adjust periodically. Toyota and Lexus vehicles also have adjustments on some engine models and are usually with the bucket and shim type like the Subaru vehicles.
